On February 12, 1957, General Electric Company of the United States announced the synthesis of cubic boron nitride CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride). Researcher R.H.Wentorf uses cubic ultra-high pressure technology to synthesize cubic boron nitride, which is second only to diamond and much harder than other materials.

Cubic boron nitride not only has high hardness, but also has good thermal stability and chemical inertness, as well as excellent infrared transmission and wide band gap. Its hardness is second only to diamond, but its thermal stability is much higher than that of diamond, which has greater chemical stability to iron-based metal elements. Cubic boron nitride abrasives are excellent in grinding performance, not only capable of processing difficult materials, improving productivity, but also effectively improving the grinding quality of workpieces.

In 2013, scientists recently synthesized nano-scale cubic boron nitride, which has surpassed diamonds and became the hardest substance in the world. Scientists have shown that this transparent material has a Vickers hardness of 108 GPa and a synthetic diamond with a Vickers hardness of 100 GPa.
