Function of Release Agent

The release agent is a functional substance between the mold and the finished product. The release agent is chemically resistant and is not dissolved when it comes into contact with the chemical components of different resins (especially styrene and amines). The release agent also has heat and stress properties and is not easily decomposed or worn; the release agent adheres to the mold without being transferred to the workpiece to be processed, and does not hinder painting or other secondary processing operations. Due to the rapid development of processes such as injection molding, extrusion, calendering, molding, lamination, etc., the amount of release agent is also greatly increased.


The release agent is an interfacial coating applied to the surface of two objects that are easily adhered to each other, which makes the surface of the object easy to detach, smooth and clean.


Release agents are widely used in various molding operations such as metal die casting, polyurethane foams and elastomers, glass fiber reinforced plastics, injection molded thermoplastics, vacuum foamed sheets and extruded profiles. In molding, sometimes other plastic fillers such as plasticizers will seep out to the interface, and a surface remover is needed to remove it.


Theoretically, the release agent has a large tensile strength so that it is not easily polished when it is often in contact with the molded resin. This is especially true when there are frosted mineral fillers or glass fiber reinforcements in the resin. The specific working principle of the release agent is as follows:


1. The polar chemical bond interacts with the surface of the mold to form an adsorption-type film having a regenerative force;


2. The silicon-oxygen bond in the polysiloxane can be regarded as a weak dipole (Si+-O-). When the release agent is spread in a single orientation on the surface of the mold, the molecule adopts a unique extended chain configuration;


3. The free surface is covered by densely packed alkyl groups, and the release ability increases with the density of the alkyl group; however, when the alkyl group occupies a large steric hindrance, the extended configuration is limited and the demolding ability is lowered;


4. The molecular weight and viscosity of the release agent are also related to the release ability. The molecular weight is small and the spreadability is good, but the heat resistance is poor.
